Middle School Online Safety

You're growing up online. Here's how to do it safely, smartly, and confidently.

What You Need to Know

Online Friends vs Real Friends
People online are not always who they say they are. Never share your address, school, or daily routine with someone you've only met online.
Cyberbullying
If someone is being mean to you online - name-calling, spreading rumours, leaving you out on purpose - that is cyberbullying and it is wrong.
Gaming Safety
Gaming is fun but be careful with who you play with online. Never share personal details with gaming strangers, no matter how friendly they seem.
Social Media & Privacy
Think carefully before posting. Once something is online, you can't fully take it back. Keep your profiles private and only accept friends you know.
Keeping Accounts Safe
Use strong passwords and never share them with friends - even best friends. What you share privately today could be public tomorrow.
When to Tell an Adult
If anything online makes you scared, uncomfortable, or confused, tell a trusted adult immediately. It is never your fault and you will not be in trouble.

Smart Online Habits

Keep your profiles set to private on all social platforms
Only add or follow people you know in real life
Tell a trusted adult if anything makes you uncomfortable
Use different passwords for different accounts
Log out of accounts on shared or school computers
Think before you post - would you be happy if your parents saw it?

Online Danger Zones

Don't share your address, school name, or daily schedule
Don't meet in person anyone you've only met online
Don't share your passwords with anyone - even close friends
Don't forward or share embarrassing content about others
Don't respond to mean messages - screenshot and report
Don't click links from people you don't know personally

Something Happened Online?

If something has happened to you online that made you feel scared, uncomfortable, or upset - it is NOT your fault and you should tell someone.

Talk to a parent, teacher, school counsellor, or contact CyberTips directly. You can report anonymously if you prefer.
